Room 417, Wednesday afternoon

Jaye gets back from photography, already struggling with her purse in an attempt to get to her cell phone.



"Hello?" Jaye asks, trying to get the phone before the person hangs up rather than check the caller ID.

"Hello, sweetheart," Karen greets her smoothly.

Ack. "Hi, Mom."

"I heard from Mahandra that you were coming back into town next weekend?"

Ack ack. "Well, you know, it's her birthday," Jaye winces, already facepalming. At herself or the conversation, maybe both.

"I'm sure I just missed your call," Karen continues. "Or there's something wrong with the answering machine. Or my voicemail."

"I was going to call," says Jaye, who totally wasn't.

"Well, you'll have to get us all of your travel information so your father can pick you up. You'll get right on that, won't you?"

There goes staying at Mahandra's. Dammit. "Yeah, right on it."

"Good. I'll see you next weekend, then."

"Yeah," Jaye sighs, and hangs up without a goodbye. Maybe she should have warned Mahandra about that not-telling-the-Tylers thing.

She shrugs a little. "Nothing new, really. I've been kind of not around and stuff. Going to visit home next weekend. And oh! Oh! Buffy was working on a boykissy poster!"

"I heart Buffy," Rory decided. "Why are you heading home?"

"Best friend's birthday, and I haven't been home since... oh, March, so I should probably put in an appearance. Since they're making me."

"Wow. Since March is kind of a long time. You don't miss your family at all, even if they're crazy?" Rory asked.

"Nah," lies Jaye. "The second I start, they usually call."

"Imagine if one of them came here to teach, like my mom did," Rory mused.

Jaye says, "EEP."

"And then your mom or dad or brother or sister or all of them, even, could spend time with you all the time...."

Jaye goes to her bed, picks up a pillow, and tries to smother herself.

"Now, don't do that," Rory said, getting up and trying to take the pillow away. "Maybe my mom could sell them on the awesomeness of glitter."

"I don't think it would work but I would still buy tickets to the show," says Jaye, looking happier.

"I mean, the woman's been trying to get Grandma to buy into stuff like that for years and it occassionally works," Rory pointed out. "How much harder would it be to convince your family, really?"

Jaye thinks about this. "I could bring some glitter home, introduce them to the idea... Warm things up for if/when Parents Weekend rolls around..."

"Exactly!" Rory said. "Take pictures of boykissy, too."

Jaye's eyes go wide, thinking of all the ways she can screw with them now. "I will," she says. "Many, many pictures."

"You'll be back by next week though, right?" Rory checked. "Mom's due on Tuesday."

"I'll be back Sunday night," she says. "Tuesday? Seriously? Okay, she's not allowed to have the baby until I get back. Or else without someone calling me."

"I'll totally call," Rory promised. "You're on the list of people who get to hear immediately."

"Yay," Jaye says. "You all excited to be a big sister?"

"Already am one," Rory pointed out. "But yeah, since this one'll actually be around where I can see him all the time. Even if babies are kind of freaky."

"I didn't know you had siblings," she says. "And yeah, babies? Definitely scary."

"I have a half-sister who lives with my dad," Rory said, pulling a picture of a towheaded little girl out of her wallet. "But yeah, when Gigi was born, I had to be in the room with Sherry - my stepmom-to-be - and it was all scary and ick. Babies are weird and they just make my skin crawl."

Jaye looks over at the picture. "Cute," she says, and then the other bit caught up with her. "Wait, you had to be in the room?"
