Room 417, Wednesday afternoon

Jaye gets back from photography, already struggling with her purse in an attempt to get to her cell phone.



"Hello?" Jaye asks, trying to get the phone before the person hangs up rather than check the caller ID.

"Hello, sweetheart," Karen greets her smoothly.

Ack. "Hi, Mom."

"I heard from Mahandra that you were coming back into town next weekend?"

Ack ack. "Well, you know, it's her birthday," Jaye winces, already facepalming. At herself or the conversation, maybe both.

"I'm sure I just missed your call," Karen continues. "Or there's something wrong with the answering machine. Or my voicemail."

"I was going to call," says Jaye, who totally wasn't.

"Well, you'll have to get us all of your travel information so your father can pick you up. You'll get right on that, won't you?"

There goes staying at Mahandra's. Dammit. "Yeah, right on it."

"Good. I'll see you next weekend, then."

"Yeah," Jaye sighs, and hangs up without a goodbye. Maybe she should have warned Mahandra about that not-telling-the-Tylers thing.

Rory was bored.

So she went up to Jaye's room and knocked on the doorframe. "Hi! Have I missed anything fun in the last like, five days?"

"Spa," says Jaye who was totally there through the whole thing omg. "Bad shark movies. Have fun?"

"I like sharks," Rory said sadly. "And no, not really. I met many cute boys though. And got drunk."

"You didn't flash anyone, did you?" asks Jaye. She doubts Rory did that. Because Jaye wasn't there to encourage her.

Alec drops by, as you do, and pokes his head in to grin at Jaye. "Hey, are we good on the being not-clingy or what?"

"I think we kinda win at that," she smiles back, waving him in. "Hey."

"No, I wore a big, fluffy dress," she replied. "I didn't miss boykissing, did I? The guys from Yale weren't all that into the idea when I explained it."

He's in the door at her wave, looking around with a slight frown for a moment before he smiles. "So what've you been doing lately?"

"If you missed it, I missed it, too," she says. "Yale boys aren't into boykissy?" That pretty much counts Yale out as anywhere she might want to go.

"They wanted girlkissing in return. I was the only girl my age there, so it wasn't an option," Rory said sadly. "Or possibly they just weren't drunk enough."

"Hanging out. Bad movies. Making plans for next weekend. Photography. Making little wooden boys," she says, pointing Dave-the-little-wooden-boy on her desk. "It's been really exciting, lemme tell you."

"Or so drunk they thought there was two of you?" she suggests.

Rory frowned. "They didn't act that drunk. I'll have to try again if I ever see them again."

Alec eyes the wooden boy and feels like there's something he should ask about it, but he ignores that. "What kind of plans for next weekend?"

"Bring friends," she nods. "Just in case."

"My friend Mahandra's birthday. I told her I'd spent the weekend up there. If I don't start running back here Friday night, anyway."

"So what is new and awesome with you?" Rory asked, sitting cross-legged on the floor. "I've barely seen anyone since I've been back."

"That doesn't sound like very highly anticipated time-spending," Alec notes, amused.

She shrugs a little. "Nothing new, really. I've been kind of not around and stuff. Going to visit home next weekend. And oh! Oh! Buffy was working on a boykissy poster!"

"I heart Buffy," Rory decided. "Why are you heading home?"

"It would have been, if I was still staying with Mahandra. But she was a dumbass and told my mom," says Jaye, who doesn't mention that she never told Mahandra not to tell anyone, and had a whole conversation with her mother on Saturday without mentioning it.

"Best friend's birthday, and I haven't been home since... oh, March, so I should probably put in an appearance. Since they're making me."

"Wow. Since March is kind of a long time. You don't miss your family at all, even if they're crazy?" Rory asked.

"Nah," lies Jaye. "The second I start, they usually call."

"Imagine if one of them came here to teach, like my mom did," Rory mused.
