Room 417, Wednesday afternoon

Jaye gets back from photography, already struggling with her purse in an attempt to get to her cell phone.



"Hello?" Jaye asks, trying to get the phone before the person hangs up rather than check the caller ID.

"Hello, sweetheart," Karen greets her smoothly.

Ack. "Hi, Mom."

"I heard from Mahandra that you were coming back into town next weekend?"

Ack ack. "Well, you know, it's her birthday," Jaye winces, already facepalming. At herself or the conversation, maybe both.

"I'm sure I just missed your call," Karen continues. "Or there's something wrong with the answering machine. Or my voicemail."

"I was going to call," says Jaye, who totally wasn't.

"Well, you'll have to get us all of your travel information so your father can pick you up. You'll get right on that, won't you?"

There goes staying at Mahandra's. Dammit. "Yeah, right on it."

"Good. I'll see you next weekend, then."

"Yeah," Jaye sighs, and hangs up without a goodbye. Maybe she should have warned Mahandra about that not-telling-the-Tylers thing.

"She was all, 'Oh, don't leave me, Rory!' about it. I can't just leave the room when a woman in labor is begging me not to."

"Why not?" asks Jaye, still grimacing at the thought.

"Because," Rory said, like that explained it.

"I would have fled," she says. "I mean, unless I actually couldn't, and even then the doors would have had to be barred." She pauses. "Are you going to have to be in there with your mom?"

"Yeah, but I like Mom a lot more than Sherry so I'm okay with it," she said. "And I don't think she had anyone with her when she had me, so that'd probably be good to cover this time around."

"Ooh, yeah," Jaye winces. "Well, I'm sure your mom appreciates it." Not that Jaye would do it, but that just means Rory's a better person, and no one is surprised.

"Probably. And if I can spill glitter on a pushy nurse or two, all the better," Rory decided. "Anyway. I should probably go study a little for my workshop later."
