Room 417, Thursday evening

It's becoming apparent to Jaye that she's not really getting out enough, save for that little side trip to the Sin the other day which was not for sex purposes thank you, but rather bothering-the-hookers purposes.

If she thinks too hard about that, she might end up putting in a call to Dr. Ron.

But she doesn't wanna, so she's hanging in her room with the door closed and actually reading her spam mail. She really should think too hard about that, because that's a sure sign she needs to get out.

Jack watched, fascinated, as his toenails changed colour. "Not me. I'm one hundred percent human. All undesireable DNA removed when they brewed me up," he explained, and undesireable had a definite sarcastic tinge to it.

"They did a good job there," she assures him, still hard at work on his feet. "So that's like fun with genetic engineering, or...?"

"Thank you," he said, smiling modestly. "Some people prefer their humans to be human only, so yeah, genetic engineering. It's pretty simple, really. You want a kid, you drop off your DNA at a lab, you come back and pick him up nine months later."

"Okay, that? So much more efficient than the current process," Jaye says, moving onto his other foot. "Because said process is kind of... gishy. That's kind of cool."

"Plus it saves you the inconvenience of hauling the kid around with you before its born." Jack lifted his foot and admired his toes. "I have pink toenails. Very nice job."

"Thank you," she chirps. "And any chips you might want, grab them now because your hands are next."

Jack quickly grabbed a handful of chips and started munching them while Jaye finished his foot. "I wonder what Sam and Cedric are going to think of me having pink toes."

"I think they'll be jealous they don't have pink toes," she says matter-of-factly.

"I think you might be right." Jack wiggled his toes again, already planning how best to spring them on Sam. "They are knd of impressive."

"And," she says helpfully, "if you look in just the right light, you can see weetiny gold flecks in the polish. They're subtle. Hand, please."

"Gold flecks? Very nice." He placed his hand in Jaye's while he tried to see the gold flecks. "Don't forget, gold on one, then red on the next, okay?"

"As you wish," she says, and starts with one color on his thumb, then his middle fingernail, going to end with his pinky. "Maybe I should do this as a career. Just paint fingernails till the fumes get to me."

"You're doing a great job." Jack watched her quietly for a minute. "What do you want to do, Jaye? With your life, I mean."

"Doesn't really matter," she answers with a shrug. "I'm just going to end up overeducated and unemployed, probably working some minimum wage job while everyone around me bemoans my wasted potential."

Jack looked at her curiously. "Why?"

"There isn't anything I really want to do," she says. "Might as well waste the parents' cash on school to make them happy, though. And to waste their cash."

"Wasting their cash makes your parents happy?" Jack asked, grinning failtly. "I only ask as I haven't got any parent's whose cash I can waste."

"It's the simple things in life that make it all worth it," she says. "No parents?"

"Nope. They never came back and picked me up. So no cash wastage." His voice was as matter of fact as Jaye's had been. "I like the red. It suits me."

She watches him for a moment, not saying the That was dumb of them that she's thinking, and finishes up his other hand before picking up the last bottle. "So what about you? Any idea what you want to do with yourself?"

"I'm going to join the Time Agency," he replied, voice practically humming with excitement. "It's all I've ever wanted to do, and when I leave here, I've got a place at the Academy waiting for me."

Jaye's smiling a little when she says, "I have no idea what that is but yay."

"Very yay," Jack laughed. "Once I've got my own time ship, I'll come back and get you, take you on a whirlwind tour of anywhen you want to go."

She might look a tiny bit excited about that. "Seriously?"
