In the end, Jaye ended up staying at her trailer, and she let Katrina stay there too. She did have to clean up the exorcism mess as payment, though, which honestly? Only fair. Then this morning had meant a call to Eric to explain what happened, keeping some details vague. When the boy you liked heard someone call you the devil and then that someone attempted an exorcism on you… it sent a signal. But things seemed to be okay now? Maybe? They were all meeting at the train station, and this was going to be super over soon.
When they got to the gate, Jaye asked, "So... You wanna grab something before you hit the road? I saw a cheesy dog stand on the way in. You like cheese."
The words were barely out of her mouth before Katrina had seized her in a tight hug.
"Woah, hey," Jaye said, unsure what to do. "You trying to squeeze the demons out of me?"
Katrina pulled back, very serious. "Don’t even joke about that. There’s no evil in you, Jaye. You have a gift."
"What I have is a ruptured clavicle," Jaye told her.
"A miracle happened because of you," Katrina said.
"A miracle? I don’t know. A happy coincidence maybe." At least until she had reason to pull the miracle worker card on someone.
"Call it what you want. But I know what happened," Katrina said. "All this time I thought I needed to get God’s attention... but he was trying to get mine. And he did. Through you."
Okay, that was a little sweet. It didn't feel terrible, helping people. Not all the time.
Eric and Father Scofield got back to the gate, train ticket in hand, which Father Scofield handed to Katrina.
"One way ticket," Eric said. "Are you sure?"
"I'm sure," Katrina said, and hugged Jaye again. She squirmed less this time at least.
"You’ve got everything you need?" Father Scofield asked.
Katrina nodded. We’re going to miss you."
"You, too. But God led me back here and I’ve got to trust that this is where I’m meant to be," he said.
"With Sadie."
"She’s.... a miracle," Father Scofield said, with no small amount of not-that-kind-of fatherly pride.
Katrina gave Jaye a look, and Jaye couldn't help but smile.
"So. Thanks for making me chase you to Niagara," Father Scofield said.
"It was my pleasure," Katrina said, as the boarding announcement came over the PA.
"Let’s get you on that train." He took her suitcase, leading her to the train to see her off.
Which left Jaye and Eric alone. At first, they didn't look at each other, till Eric said, "So."
"So," Jaye returned.
"Turns out you were right."
"Huh. I almost never hear that sentence," Jaye said with a little smile, and he smiled a little back, and this was okay again. .
"I’m sorry I got so weird," he said. "I guess maybe I was projecting some of my issues onto her."
Oh honey. "You think?"
"Even though I feel like I have every right to be here...I think I was also feeling a little guilty about not going back," Eric admitted.
"And now what does it feel like?" If she was a little nervous about it, well. Who knew what all this had brought up.
The PA sounded again. "Train five-B to Paterson, New Jersey with stops at White Plains, Hoboken and Trenton. Leaving in five minutes from gate three."
Eric considered that, and nodded. "Feels like there’s a train every hour."
