Niagara Falls, Wednesday late morning
"This is weird," Jaye says as Mahandra parks the car.
"What?"
"Nothing weird's happened since I've been home."
Mahandra makes a face and says, "Well, yeah. Except for foreign exchange students randomly stalking you throughout the weekend to say hi, home is boring."
Usually it's not anymore. Usually she has to do something like stalk a person to get them to do something, or sometimes there's theft. She's not used to a quiet weekend at home. It's weird. "Yeah. Maybe I'm used to drama," Jaye says.
Mahandra stops the car, and Jaye immediately misses the heater. "So are we not going to see you until Easter now?" she asks.
Jaye shakes her head. "I'm sure I'll be home. They'll be trying to get me back so they can torture me before I'm away at college and have that whole legal adult thing working for me."
"You actually applied?" Mahandra asks, feigning shock. Well, she might be feigning.
"I did," she says. "Brown, Princeton and UCLA."
"Wow, still fleeing home, huh."
Jaye shrugs. "Like you said, it's boring."
Mahandra doesn't look happy, but says, "Stick with California. We'll hunt down movie stars together."
"Hunt down?"
"You know what I mean."
"Yeah, hunt down."
Mahandra grins. "I wouldn't put anyone on my mantel or anything. I could be happy bronzing Denzel, though."
Jaye nods happily. "I should be going," she says. "Stupid departure times."
"Yeah," she says, leaning over the seat to give her BFF a hug. Because Mahandra could get away with things like that. "Call when you get in?"
"Definitely," she says, and pauses as she makes sure nothing's talking to her again.
"What?"
"Nothing. Don't get too bored without me."
"Impossible."
Jaye grins at her, grabs her bag from the floor of the passenger seat, and gets out of the car.
And when the bus to Alexandria breaks down halfway there, Jaye has no idea why nothing's telling her to try and fix the flat or club someone with a tire iron or something. Maybe fate's broken. ...That would be awesome.
